Sandra is a devoted wife and mother to three wonderful boys aged 12, 11, and 8. Her youngest son, Nick, was born totally blind, and his journey has been nothing short of inspiring. From a very young age, Nick began attending NFB Conventions and BELL programs, which have played a vital role in shaping his confidence, skills, and independence. Over the years, he has become a strong Braille reader and is now an independent young man, actively embracing the tools and resources available to him through the National Federation of the Blind. His experiences, along with the support of his family, have allowed him to thrive and navigate life with strength and resilience.

As a mother, Sandra has been deeply involved in her children’s lives, ensuring they have access to the best opportunities and resources to succeed, particularly Nick. Sandra’s commitment goes beyond the role of a typical parent—she is a passionate advocate for her children, especially in the blind community. She has embraced the role of caregiver, supporter, and community builder, often sharing her knowledge with other parents and families to ensure a brighter future for children with blindness.

Sandra’s involvement with the NFB has been a central part of her advocacy work. She has connected with a vast network of families, educators, and advocates through the NFB, participating in local chapter meetings, conventions, and other events. Through these experiences, Sandra has gained valuable insights into the latest advancements in technology, accessibility, and advocacy, which have empowered her to take action in her own community to address challenges facing blind individuals. Sandra believes that the collective strength of the NFB community is essential in pushing for change at both the local and national levels.

Sandra’s connection to the NFB also extends through her active involvement with the National Organization of Parents of Blind Children (NOPBC). As a mother of a blind child, she has found tremendous support and understanding within this community. Sandra has attended and contributed to numerous NOPBC workshops, learning best practices in teaching Braille, independent living skills, and more. She has also shared her own experiences with other parents, offering guidance and encouragement, and actively advocating for better educational services for blind children.

Her advocacy efforts through both organizations have included working with local school districts to improve accommodations for blind students and supporting legislative initiatives aimed at enhancing services for blind individuals. Sandra is particularly passionate about Braille education, recognizing its critical role in promoting independence and success for blind children. She has worked tirelessly to ensure that Braille literacy is prioritized in her community, helping to foster environments where blind students have the tools they need to succeed academically and in life.

Sandra’s involvement with the NFB and NOPBC has enriched her family’s life and enabled her to be a powerful advocate for blind children and their families. Her work within these organizations reflects her unwavering dedication to creating a more inclusive world where blind individuals, like her son Nick, can reach their fullest potential and live independently. Sandra’s journey as a mother and advocate serves as a testament to the profound impact of support, advocacy, and community in helping children with blindness thrive.
